Stealing Your Commissions

Those of us who are involved in trying to earn a little extra income by becoming affiliates, running websites, and doing postings like this one to get some backlinks to our sites are always upset when we discover "black hat" tactics that stuff cookies on people without their knowledge. Reporting such tactics is usually successful in getting that webmaster stopped.

Most of us do things on the up and up. We write articles, post hub pages, create blogs, exchange links, and perform all the time consuming and tedious tasks it requires to get that SEO and some page ranking in order to drive traffic and earn some commission money. Some of us go so far as to honestly report about the affiliate tools being offered to us that usually do nothing more than take our money.

One thing I no longer do is sell my own items on eBay.

I am a member of a FREE TO LIST auction website. See my items on Yabexe.com and join to avoid ebay fees if you are a seller. Thank you!

For those of you who drive traffic to eBay, you may not be aware of an apparent agreement between ePN and Auctiva that allows Auctiva to divert traffic already on eBay to their own website and return them to eBay with a newly planted cookie that has overwritten yours - the one that got them there in the first place.

If you are not aware of Auctiva, they are a picture hosting service. They are the ones who offer the picture enlargement and other "freebies" on eBay to sellers.

Their cookie is placed when a buyer chooses to view an enlarged picture of the item listed, if the seller offers that option. Yes, it's true. Your website that directed "quality traffic" (as they require) to eBay is being screwed by Auctiva who steals your traffic and commission because they offer an enlarged picture.

eBay and ePN are aware of it. The ePN forum has angry affiliates asking why and how this is allowed when the rest of us would be booted out of the program for such a blatant violation of their TOS. This is only the beginning. As more information is being gathered, it is now being disclosed that Toolbars being offered by major players automatically overwrite cookies upon the purchase of any item.

Pressure needs to be applied to ePN to treat all affiliates equally.

If you are an eBay affiliate, join the ePN Forum and voice your opinion. We need to stop this approved black hat tactic NOW!

Thanks for a clear and accurate description of the unfair practices over at Auctiva. I have a couple sites that don't seem to be affected by it. (No Auctiva image galleries). However, a third site is being heavily affected by it. It's a fashion related niche and most of the auctions I've checked have either an Auctiva or Vendio image gallery. They also have removed text links back to their respective sites in favor of image links. This, I believe, in an effort to keep us from filtering out those auctions.

I've stopped actively promoting the third site until this is rectified. I drive the traffic and Auctiva reaps the rewards??? ..I think not!

I see this post is over a year old so I will like to know if this still happens?

Yes, as far as I'm aware eBay has not reined in Auctiva.

Some idiot named "Joe" left a comment saying that the planting of cookies wasn't done when enlarging pictures. Without showing him how it was done (he'd probably use the method) he did confirm that they were planting cookies in other ways. He also said eBay has put their foot down and it doesn't happen anymore.

What they've done is put their foot in the affiliates ass again, as they are now paying for "clicks", rather than a percentage of the sale.

Joe, go back to your job as a "pink" over at ePN boards.
